The Mandrake, Nairobi

The Mandrake is a 14-storey Grade A office tower located in Westlands, Nairobi, designed to deliver high performance in both energy efficiency and occupant comfort. UGC was engaged from the early design stages, working closely with the project team to embed sustainability strategies into the building’s core systems and architectural layout.

Using advanced building simulation tools, UGC optimised the building envelope, ventilation design, daylight access, and system selections to reduce energy demand and improve natural comfort. Passive design features—including effective shading, natural ventilation, and efficient spatial layouts—were integrated alongside high-performance HVAC, solar PV, and water-efficient fixtures.

The project has achieved EDGE Design Certification and is on track to finalise full certification upon completion in 2025. The design reflects not only strong operational savings but also a significant reduction in embodied carbon through careful material specification and structural optimisation.
