Shah Houses, Nairobi

The Shah Houses in Ngara, Nairobi, represent a unique and pioneering example of sustainable retrofit in East Africa. Originally constructed in the 1950s during the colonial era, the buildings have been thoughtfully redesigned and upgraded to serve as a vibrant co-working and creative hub.

UGC was engaged by NBST Africa to conduct an EDGE feasibility assessment and guide the project through a performance-driven retrofit strategy. The buildings were stripped back and carefully retrofitted, focusing on improving energy efficiency, water conservation, and reducing environmental impact—while preserving the historical context.

The project successfully achieved EDGE Advanced certification, demonstrating that even older buildings can be reimagined for the future of sustainable urban living.
