Vienna Court, Nairobi
Vienna Court, located on State House Crescent in Nairobi, is a pioneering office development and the first project in Kenya to achieve LEED Gold certification. As one of UGC’s earliest sustainability engagements, this project laid the foundation for high-performance green buildings in East Africa.
UGC was involved from the very early stages—when the site still housed old apartment blocks. These were carefully demolished, with many materials salvaged and reused. In a rare and thoughtful design approach, the architects preserved the central one-acre garden, excavating around the site’s perimeter to protect mature trees and minimise ecological disruption. The development was built around this green core, offering tenants a uniquely tranquil and climate-friendly environment.
The project integrated numerous passive and active sustainability strategies, including natural ventilation, high daylight access, solar shading, and the use of locally sourced materials. Vienna Court remains a standout example of how green design can be elegant, cost-effective, and regionally appropriate.
