335 Rhapta Road is a small private residence in Nairobi that underwent extensive renovations to elevate the home’s energy and water performance to international green standards. The project was developed by Rhapta Road Plaza Ltd. and audited by UGC’s Amrish Shah under the strict guidelines of GBCI. It stands as one of the earliest EDGE Advanced-certified homes in Kenya and the region. The renovation focused on retaining existing structural elements while integrating high-performance systems for lighting, hot water generation, rainwater harvesting, and efficient fixtures. The project reflects a growing interest in sustainable home retrofits and demonstrates that even compact residential projects can meet global benchmarks for performance and efficiency.
Project Sustainability Features
- 46% energy savings, through reflective roof and wall finishes, reduced glazing ratio, solar PV, heat pump for hot water, efficient appliances and lighting, and lighting controls
- 64% water savings, via low-flow fixtures and a rainwater harvesting system
- 61% reduction in embodied carbon in materials, including reuse of existing roof and walls, and use of low-impact finishes such as stone block walls, ceramic tiles, and parquet flooring
