Workable is a flexible co-working space located on three floors within Sanlam Towers in Nairobi, Kenya. Designed to offer sustainable, high-quality shared workspace, it is the first co-working office project in Kenya to achieve EDGE certification. UGC was engaged to lead the sustainability assessment and certification process, working with the Workable team to identify and implement practical performance upgrades across energy, water, and materials. The project focused on integrating efficiency improvements while preserving functionality, comfort, and design flexibility for users. Workable achieved final EDGE certification in July 2024, setting a benchmark for green co-working environments in the region.
Project Sustainability Features
- 22% energy savings, including an insulated roof and floor slab, efficient cooling system, and interior LED lighting
- 48% water savings, achieved through water-efficient bathroom faucets, dual-flush water closets, and urinals
- 95% reduction in embodied carbon in materials, largely due to reuse of existing structure, flooring, roof, and walls
- Use of sustainable carpet materials made from plant fibres
- First EDGE-certified co-working space in Kenya, demonstrating leadership in low-impact shared workspaces
